Pharmacy GP transition programmes

Pharmacy GP transition programmes

There are two pharmacy GP transition programmes available.

The GP pharmacist transition programme has been designed for pharmacists NEW to GP practice work - either directly employed or in a cluster role. The programme provides access to an experienced GP Pharmacist tutor to support the tutee pharmacist in their new role to create an e-portfolio of evidence based on a competency framework to ensure safe and effective practice.

The programme includes 21 days of tutor support over the 12-month period, based in the practice of the GP pharmacist or GP pharmacist tutor. An additional 3 days’ training are offered to attend Telephone Consultation Skills training; Clinical Examination Skills training and non-clinical skills training e.g Assertiveness and Negotiation.

This support will enable the GP practice pharmacist to develop in a structured, timely and safe way, to contribute towards the GP practice workload as effectively as possible. The time management will be agreed with the practice involved to support the training of the GP practice pharmacist and aid with the development of a network for ongoing support. There is no fee payable by the practice of the new GP pharmacist. The funding supplied by HEIW is to cover the role of the tutor.

Feedback from Tutees who have completed the Programme:

Jenni has been a huge support to me throughout the course, I've learnt so much from her, could not have asked for a better tutor!"

Thank you very much. My tutor has been great in supporting me through the programme. She was encouraging and able to provide guidance and feedback promptly which has helped me on my surgery days. Thankful for her and the programme in my role development."

I would like to praise and express my gratitude to my tutor for all his hard work during my GP Transition Course. My previous professional experience was solely in a community pharmacy role, therefore having my tutor as a skilled educational supervisor was extremely helpful. He was very knowledgeable and always patiently addressed all my questions. I felt that our discussions were always immensely informative. He explored complex clinical dilemmas and provided invaluable guidance. I found his teaching method to be full of positive reinforcement and encouragement. His constructive comments and subsequent detailed emails included additional resources and significantly aided my progression. Overall, I think that I was tremendously lucky to have him as my mentor and I wanted to share this feedback with the extended team. I would highly recommend him to all future learners."

Feedback from current tutees:

A positive is that I now have contacts in the same role as me- it’s nice to have others to chat to/discuss things with and ask for advice."

The course is very informative, and I'm pleased that I am learning new skills to help me with my role."
