HEIW offer an opportunity for existing employees in a pharmacy team in Wales to achieve the qualifications to meet the entry criteria for application to the HEIW Apprenticeship Pre-registration Training Programme.
HEIW offer:
- Applied Science Level 2 (GCSE or equivalent to GCSE Science)
- Essential Skills Wales Level 2 Application of Numbers (equivalent to GCSE Maths)
- Essential Skills Wales Level 2 Communications (equivalent to GCSE English)
- Essential Skills Wales Level 2 Digital Literacy
How does someone apply?
To Apply please complete the HEIW Access to - Application form.
Where is the course delivered?
Delivered as separate qualifications as blended learning with flexibility to complete at a time convenient to learner. Face to face attendance is required at the College to complete two controlled assessments for each qualification that they are completing.
- Delivered via Cardiff and Vale College
There could be an opportunity for delivery via a College in North Wales if there are sufficient numbers.
How often are the courses run?
The next cohort is due to start in Septembers 2024. Further cohorts can start an a monthly basis from October 2024.
What format are the assessments?
Two controlled assessments to be completed at the College for each qualification being completed.
How long might it take the average learner to complete each GCSE equivalent via the access course?
Can be completed in 14 weeks depending on learning motivation and opportunity of time to dedicate to learning.
Where is the course delivered?
All courses are delivered via blended learning with virtual tutorials and face to face attendance at the College approximately once every four to six weeks.
North Wales
- Delivered via Grwp Llandrillo Menai (face to face attendance at Rhos campus)
South east Wales
- Delivered via Bridgend College (face to face attendance at Pencoed College)
South west Wales
- Delivered via Gower College (face to face attendance at Ty-Coch campus)
How often are the courses run?
One annual intake for a September start. The next cohort is due to start in September 2024.
What format are the assessments?
Course work throughout the course and controlled assessments to be completed at the College.
How long might it take the average learner to complete each GCSE equivalent via the access course?
The qualification is delivered throughout one academic year September – May.
Available as a blended delivery model via various training providers. Location and specific model will be dependent on numbers.
Is there any additional support expected from the Employer?
The contractor will need to support the learner to be able to attend the face to face controlled assessments which may be during working hours (one assessment for each qualification being completed).
For Science face to face delivery will be 6pm – 9pm. The contractor may need to support the learner to be able to arrive at the venue for a 6pm start (on average once every four to six weeks).
Will the Employer be expected to release the learner during normal working hours?
The contractor will need to support the employee to be able to attend the face-to-face controlled assessments which may be during working hours (one assessment for each qualification being completed).

What do learners need?
Learners need access to appropriate technology to attend virtual tutorials and access resources e.g. laptop and to be able to attend face to face tutorials and controlled assessments as required for the qualification that they are completing.
